Brophy golf tees up for a new year

The golf season is in full swing as the team primes itself for another competitive year.

A younger, but closer varsity team with only two seniors is led by coach Mr. Jon Shores.

“I’m excited about the season,” Mr. Shores said.

The coach said none of the players who represented Brophy at state last year are returning, making the team younger than usual. With no freshmen on the team, the core consists mostly of sopohmores and juniors.

Woods realizes mistakes, public needs to back off

Everyone remembers the day after Thanksgiving in 2009 as the day the “Tiger scandal” appeared on television.

He had hit a fire hydrant with the front bumper of his car, and from then on it just kept getting worse for then the world’s No. 1 golfer.

It came out that he had been cheating on his wife with not just one, but multiple mistresses.

Woods, who has won 82 professional golf tournaments (14 of those being majors) and had held the world No. 1 ranking for 623 weeks fell from that spot in early November when Lee Westwood of England took over.

Golf team promises potential in new season

The Brophy Golf Team has finally broken their dry spell.

After 10 years of losing the Brophy Invitational, the Brophy team pulled out a 455-455 victory against Hamilton, with the score coming down to a fifth man tiebreaker.

This year’s golf team, 15 members strong, is comprised of five seniors, six sophomores and four freshmen.

Golf takes third place at Antigua National Invitational

On Sept. 10-11, the golf team traveled to Maricopa at Southern Dunes Golf Club to compete against teams from around the country in a 36-hole tournament.

On the first day of the tournament, the Bronco golfers putted well as they closed out with a team score of six under par.

The Broncos were led by Chris Petefish ’14 who went five under par 67 and David Lowe ’11 who shot a four under par 68, according to head coach Mr. Jon Shores.

Golf state team welcomes strong-putting freshman prospect

As the varsity golf team progressed late into their season, they welcomed an unordinary person onto the state team: a freshman.

Tyler Kertson ’13 is one of the smallest and youngest members of the team, but that doesn’t stop him from also being one of the best players.

Kertson said he began playing when he was only two years old with plastic golf clubs in the backyard. Watching his dad play in local tournaments, Kertson’s thirst for competition grew and he began playing competitively.

The long, tiresome season has come to a close for the Brophy varsity golf team.

After a slow start, the Broncos battled their way back into contention and proved that they are still a top competitor in the super-region and state tournaments.

The team got a lot of momentum going into the state tournament by finishing first in their bracket in the super-region tournament.

Golf team looks to end season strong

Two matches and one tournament is all the varsity golf team has left to prove that they are still among the top competitors in high school golf.

The team showed they still have it with a match win against Pinnacle and North Canyon Oct. 6.

“I think that things are starting to turn around for us,” said coach Mr. Jon Shores. “The team is starting to do a little bit better. We got off to a slow start, guys weren’t playing all that great, and for whatever reason five guys weren’t playing well. But the last couple of weeks the guys have really started to play a lot better.”
