Haiti has been slowly recovering from the earthquake in early January that left more than 300,000 people dead.
Now only nine months from this event, cholera finds its way to Haiti.
Cholera has killed nearly 300 people and has infected approximately 4,000 people within the past few weeks of its discovery, according to MSNBC.
“The cholera bacteria that originated in Haiti is similar to what has been found in Southwestern Asia,” according to SIFY News.
As I was watching the Spanish news on TV recently, I saw with my own eyes the devastation the people in Haiti suffered after the earthquake on Jan. 12.
Similarly, I saw the news of the disastrous earthquake in Chile on Feb. 27 and realized that there is a need to help a fellow American country.
According to The New York Times, the first Chilean earthquake on Feb. 27 was at an 8.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. CNN stated about subsequent quakes on Mar. 15 and 16, “A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit at 11:39 a.m. local time (9:39 a.m. ET), followed by a 6.7-magnitude quake 16 minutes later, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. A third, measured at magnitude 6.0, came 27 minutes later.”
Immediately after an earthquake devastated Haiti, students and staff members at Brophy heard the cry for help and banded together to raise thousands of dollars through a multitude of fundraisers and created a vigil to commemorate the people of Haiti.
The recent earthquake in Haiti left hundreds of thousands dead, missing or badly hurt. Even more are left without homes and without adequate food and water.

As aid services from all over the world flock to the small island country to help them, the ripple effect of graciousness and caring has reached the Brophy community with great fervor.
The first time I ever heard of Haiti was back in 2008 in Mr. JP Jarcyzk’s Gospels in Actions class.
As part of the curriculum we read Tracy Kidder’s “Mountain Beyond Mountains,” which highlighted the poverty and economic inequality of Haiti.
It discussed the work of Dr. Paul Farmer, who was trying to give Haitians basic medical supplies to improve their quality of life.
