Swim team adds another strong freshman class, seeks 28th straight state championship

The Brophy swim team has a bit of pressure on their backs—about 27 successful years of championships in the making.

Still, despite what seem to many as incredibly high stakes, the swimmers are prepared to take the season on with confidence and but also strong work ethic.

“The teams looking real good,” said Mr. Pat O’Neill of the upcoming season.

The swimmers have been hard at work year-round, and are ready to jump right back into the pool this fall.

“Truly the majority of them didn’t have a summer rest, so I don’t think there was much rest at all,” Mr. O’Neill said.

One of these students was Sean Gage ’17,who practiced and competed with his club team over summer.

“It’s definitely a year round commitment,” Gage said.

While the legacy of the team is older than all of it’s current members, new incoming talent seem to spark hopes that it will be living on for a while longer.

“We had a great freshman class last year, we’ve got a great one this year too,” Mr. O’Neill said. “We lost about 12 seniors last year, but these guys have worked really hard and I’m sure they’ll step into the shoes very fast and very quickly.”

The swimmers, such as Jack Blake ’17, are ready for a fresh year in the pool but out as well.

“I think one of the best parts of the team is that we all have other stuff we are interested in as well,” Blake, an Honors Spanish student, said.

Another student, Luke Ottomeyer ’18, admires the unity of the team.

“We all have different strong suits and different events, but we all are one united team competing together,” Ottomeyer said.
