Students at Brophy College Prep have different opinions about how safe they feel on and around campus, with some feeling unsafe despite police data showing the area has relatively low to very low crime rates.
While students spend most of their day on campus, they often have the freedom before and after school to walk around campus and to the surrounding area. Students from Brophy all are from all over the valley. Some drive 30+ minutes to school while others are able to walk to school.
“I think it’s less safe here, I feel there is a higher chance of being mugged or robbed,” said Flynn McCracken ‘26, who drives to school.
McCracken also said that he felt worried when Brophy expressed feelings of concern about the possibility of crime around campus. “I feel it’s a lot higher here than at my home in north Scottsdale,” said McCracken.
However, McCracken said there was no big incident that caused his opinion, and he felt uneasy about the area in general.
On the other hand, some students feel secure in and around campus, “Brophy is a pretty secure campus,” said Greg Zabor ’26, who walks to school.
Zabor also said he feels safe around campus how many people there would be people to witness anything that happens. Zabor also felt that Brophy’s security does a good job making students feel secure on campus.
The data provided by the Phoenix Police Department indicates that Brophy has a “low” to “very low” crime rate relative to the rest of the city of Phoenix. Brophy also sits in an area with more property crime than personal crime.
However, crime still occurs around Brophy. Local Crime mapping data indicates car theft and assault are the most common crimes around Brophy.
