Brophy missed seven of their 14 free throws and could not hold on to a lead in the final minutes to lose against Westwind Prep Tuesday, Jan. 17 by a score of 52-49.
Capping a 7-0 run, Westwind senior guard Pewee Gardner made a falling layup following a Brophy missed one-and-one opportunity with about 1:30 left in the game 48-46.
Jordan Medl ’12 answered with a three-pointer with less than a minute to play to give Brophy the lead 49-48.
However, Westwind senior Damion Radford scored quickly to give them the lead again at 50-49.
James Harper ’12 was fouled on Brophy’s next possession but could not convert the free throw chance with 4.1 seconds left.
Westwind Prep’s Coy Mattox sealed the game with two free throws to extend the lead to 52-49, which would become the final after a Harper miss at the buzzer.
“We had costly turnovers and some missed free throws,” said coach Mr. Tony Fuller. “We gotta perform better, we just gotta perform better.”
Harper finished with 17 points, including a big alley-oop dunk to end the third quarter and extend the Broncos lead to 40-37 heading into the fourth. He also grabbed four rebounds.
Medl had 11 points and seven rebounds and Tim Kempton ’13 added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Broncos fall to 15-5 overall, 7-3 in the division and will travel to Desert Vista Thursday, Jan. 19.
