THE ROUNDUP
Brophy traveled to the Best of the West tournament in San Diego in early March and went 3-3, finishing in 21st place.
They also went to the annual Las Vegas tournament, the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament, on April 2-3 where they went 7-2 and placed second for the second straight year.
On April 13-14, Brophy hosted an invite where they ended up in third place behind Gilbert and Highland.
As of April 17, the Broncos have a 19-7 overall record.
The team lost six seniors from last year, Matt Pohlman ’11, Sai Tummala ’11, John Heiland ’11, Cooper Nagaki ’11, Tyler Miller ’11 and Chris Erdely ’11.
Even though the team lost some seniors, younger players are already stepping up in their absence.
“Jake Kufel ’13 has been fantastic, stepping up,” said head coach Mr. Tony Oldani. “Scott Mueller ’13 has really grown and we have a sophomore Billy Andrew ’14 who’s becoming the vocal leader, even as a sophomore.”
This year’s team is relatively young, with two freshman, three sophomores and four juniors as well as the team’s seniors.
The team returns three starters from last year, including Nick Benson ’12, Kufel and Carson Westerfield ’12.
According to Mr. Oldani, Benson has been offered to play Division 1 volleyball next year at NYU and Princeton University.
Concordia University has also expressed an interest in some of the team’s players.
