The Broncos hit four home runs scoring seven runs in their first playoff victory Tuesday May 2 against Desert Vista.
“We came out and swung the bats the best we have in a month,” said head coach Mr. Ted Succow.
The scoring action began in the second inning when Nick Jewett ’12 doubled, scoring Jeff Clausen ’12.
Brophy scored six runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 7-0. The first run of the inning came on a Dave Graybill ’12 solo homerun.
Two batters later Chris Beall ’12 hit a two-run homerun. Next to hit over the fence was Connor Messman ’13 who hit a two-run homerun.
The last run of the inning was on a one-out double from Charlie Capolla ’13 that scored Ryan Castillani ’14.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Broncos scored four more runs, making the score 11-0. Beall hit an RBI triple and then scored off an RBI single from Messman.
Messman came in on a Castillani homerun.
Desert Vista was able cut the lead in the top of the fifth when Colby Woodmanse hit a grand slam making the game 11-4.
“Desert Vista is always going to go down fighting… they beat us at their place a couple of weeks ago 6-5, they play really hard,” Mr. Succow said.
In the bottom of the fifth, Brophy scored another run when Clausen hit a ground ball to score Emilio Torrez ’12.
In the sixth inning Conner Moore ’12 hit a sacrifice fly to score Messman making the score 13-4.
In the seventh inning Brophy took out pitcher Jake Steffens ’12 after he threw six innings giving up five hits and four runs. The Broncos put in Isaiah Deutsch ’14, who threw 17 pitches giving up two hits and three runs holding off Desert Vista in the end.
The Broncos won the game by a final score of 13-7,eliminating Desert Vista from the playoffs and advancing to the double-elimination round of eight teams.
Brophy will move on to play No. 5 seed Desert Ridge at Camelback Ranch Stadium in Glendale on Thursday, May 3.
