THE ROUNDUP
Players, coaches and fans shed tears on the Brophy sidelines Friday night at McLintock High School by as the Broncos
watched their championship hopes slip away.
The Broncos were shut out for the first time this season by a team they beat by 26 points a month and a half earlier.
“Do I want to talk about what went wrong? No not really, I really don’t,” said head football coach Mr. Scooter Molander after the state semifinal playoff game.
Throughout the first quarter Brophy controlled field position.
Punter Matt Auran ’13 pinned Mountain Pointe at their own three, 13 and seven yard lines at different points throughout the game.
The Broncos gained significant yardage on their opening drive, but from that point on they gained 100 offensive yards and were forced into three three and outs.
The coaching staff implemented a new offensive scheme by placing Robert Relf ’13 at running back for a time to try and spark the offense.
Relf finished with 14 yards rushing and 6 tackles at his traditional role of linebacker.
The Bronco defense did not allow Mountain Pointe to penetrate the red zone until midway through the second quarter.
On that drive, Mountain Pointe connected on a 13 yard touchdown pass.
The Broncos held the Pride to a three and out and left the field at halftime down a touchdown, 7-0.
Throughout the second half, Mountain Pointe shut down the Broncos offense.
Tyler Bruggman ’13 finished his Brophy career by passing for 34 yards; he completed six of his 21 pass attempts, ran for 13 yards and had one interception.
“He’ll be a great quarterback in the future, he’s very bright, throws the ball real well and he’ll do a heck of a job,” Molander said of Bruggman.
Marche Dennard ’13 ran for 46 yards in limited playing time.
These were both season lows for the starting quarterback and running back.
Mountain Pointe’s second touchdown came on their opening drive of the second half when they marched down the field and scored off a 10 yard touchdown pass.
On the ensuing play, the Broncos fumbled and Mountain Pointe capitalized with a three yard down run to go up 21-0.
The Pride added one more score before the quarter ended on a 13 yard touchdown run.
Early in the fourth quarter the Pride scored for the final time on a 20 yard field goal to go ahead 30-0.
The Broncos put together one final promising drive down to the Mountain Pointe fifteen before a pass in the end zone was intercepted.
Brophy finished the season with an 11-3 record and made it to the semi-finals for the first time since 2008.
Notes:
- On a punt attempt midway through the first quarter, the snap to Auran sailed over his head. Auran promptly retrieved the ball and punted the ball to the Mountain Pointe 13 while on the run.
- Devon Allen ’13 had no receptions in the game.
- Bruggman’s first completion came halfway through the second quarter.
- Despite the loss, some starting defenders still put up impressive stats: Andrew Curtis ’13 had eight tackles, Conner Martinez ’13, D’Amani Grayer ’13, and Ryan Castellani ’14 all finished with seven tackles a piece.
