THE ROUNDUP
After leading the majority of the game, Brophy football fell to Red Mountain in the fourth quarter Friday, Sept. 20.
The Broncos defense held the opposing team to just 13 points the entire game, but that was still enough for the Mountain Lions of Red Mountain to defeat Brophy 13-12.
“They have a very powerful offense, very dynamic offense, and for us to hold them to 13 points is a good effort,” said head coach Mr. Scooter Molander.
Through the first five Red Mountain drives of the game, the Brophy defense held them to no points.
The defense also forced Red Mountain to punt four times out of their eight drives, but gave up two touchdowns in the last 11 minutes of the game.
As for the offense, Brophy used sophomore Ryan Velez ’16 for the running back in Friday’s game.
“Ryan Velez, the tailback, ran awesome,“ Mr. Molander said following the game.
Velez had 188 rushing yards and added 12 passing yards for a total of 200 yards and one touchdown.
Will Edwards ’14 had the other Brophy touchdown, along with 37 yards in the game.
The Broncos missed a field goal and two point after attempts. This kept the score 12-0 Brophy with a little more than 11 minutes left in the game.
“Well, I think we have a lot to look forward to, we are on the crest, we just got to keep plugging away,” Velez said.
With just a little more than one minute left in the game the Mountain Lions scored a touchdown to tie the score at 12.
Red Mountain’s drive started at the 20-yard line. A few pass completions for 73 yards and running the ball for seven yards led to a Red Mountain touchdown.
They scored the extra point with 1:05 left to take the lead 13-12.
Sophomore quarterback Cade Knox ’16 had a pass intercepted with 0:46 left, which gave Red Mountain the opportunity to kneel the ball and end the game.
Knox finished the night with 99 passing yards and 10 yards on the ground.
Mr. Molander added that he was proud of his players and that they battled hard.
This is Brophy’s third loss of the season, bringing their record to 1-3.
Their next game is Friday, Sept. 27 against Desert Ridge.
