THE ROUNDUP
The opening speaker at Mass gives the introduction, and the musicians on stage begin to play a hymn.
At the forefront stands a Brophy student who is recognizable from nearly all school and parish Masses held at Saint Francis Xavier Church.
Andrew Contreras ’15 is that familiar face.
He was born June 20, 1997, in Los Angeles, Calif.
“I love singing church music, traditional church music, and contemporary church music as well,” Contreras said, who also sings at Saint Francis Xavier three times each Sunday.
Contreras took to singing after growing up with a brother who is now a professional singer.
“My brother kind of passed it on to me, I don’t really want to follow his steps, but I want to keep music with me my entire life,” Contreras said.
Singing is not the only musical involvement in his life though. Contreras said he is also fond of playing guitar and drums; however, he learned how to sing first.
He also shares his vocal abilities in day to day life with his friends.
“A moment that I remember is on the way back from Manresa on our Hermanos Unidos retreat,” said Manuel Trejo ’15. “The whole time we had music that anyone could play and Andrew showed his singing ability when we had Justin Timberlake on the song ‘Holy Grail’… throughout that whole song Andrew did a great impersonation of Justin Timberlake.”
Contreras has something of an unrealized gift in his voice according to his friends, but he would rather be known for his ability to be a friend.
“He’s not bad,” joked Jake DeRito ’15 when asked how Contreras is as a friend
