THE ROUNDUP
There were four lead changes in the final quarter Friday, Sept. 26, but Brophy was able to hold off Desert Ridges’high-powered offense for a homecoming victory.
The Broncos came away with a 40-35 win over Desert Ridge at home, upsetting the No. 5 team in Arizona.
Following the game, fans stormed the field as they, the players, coaches and families celebrated the win.
Desert Ridge beat Brophy 38-14 last year.
Down by five with less than three minutes in the game, Desert Ridge had two different drives that ended in no points despite being in the red zone both times.
The first was because of a failed fourth-down conversion due to a dropped pass in the end zone and the second on an incompletion as time expired.
Ryan Velez ’16 finished the night with 58 yards rushing and Isaiah Oliver ’15 had his best game of the season with 188 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
“A complete team victory,”said head coach Mr. Scooter Molander. “I am so proud of our kids. We talked about taking it one play at a time and don’t worry about the scoreboard.”
Streator Bates ’15 finished the night with a touchdown and a few field goals to add on, including a 49-yard field goal.
“Streator Bates had a heck of a game kicking the ball, kicked it in the end zone, which is what we needed and had a big, long field goal,”Mr. Molander said.
Mr. Molander said the defense really stepped up and that is why they won.
“Ultimately, great games are won by defense and our defense stepped up big time,” he said.
Cade Knox ’16 had a career game leading the offense, with 393 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He also had a rushing touchdown off a 61-yarder on the first offensive play of the second half.
“Cade’s remarkable. He is a flat out D1 quarterback and if he didn’t prove it tonight with that run, someone is going to get a great young man who can really throw and run,”Mr. Molander said. “We are very happy to have him and we get him for one more year.”
Notes:
- With the win, the broncos improve to 3-3 on the season.
- This was the second most they have scored this year.
- Their next game is Thursday, Oct. 2 at Corona Del Sol, who is 1-4 on the season.
