Brophy Esports are “dropping in” to upcoming Fortnite PlayVS tournament

By Ransom Kaul

THE ROUNDUP

Get your gamer chairs and PCs ready, because Brophy’s upcoming Fortnite Intramurals are already here! Beginning in early October, three teams, coached by Ms. Shawna Khan and Mr. Kyle McCoy, have been representing Brophy in a PlayVS-run Fortnite tournament for a chance to compete on the national stage.

With matches already underway, sign-ups are closed, but fans of Brophy esports can still support their team by tuning in to the official esports Twitch Channel, Brophy_esports, to watch a livestream of the games. The next regular season match will be on October 19 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, so fans who wish to follow the progress of the esports team can show their school spirit by coming out virtually to support their fellow Broncos.

The Brophy participants who have entered into the competition say that they all feel well-prepared and are ready to compete at this year’s tournament, which is the first-ever Fortnite tournament that Brophy has officially fielded a team in. Sean Kelly ’24, who is currently participating in the tournament elaborated on how he and his teammates have been preparing.

He said that he practices with his team often, and has greatly reduced the amount of time he spends on other games in order to make more room for Fortnite. Ms. Khan, his coach, also said that the Innovation Commons has been opened to participants who wish to come in early and practice before the school day begins. Ms. Khan said that a school practice is entirely up to the participants based on their availability.

Brophy esports is ready to continue their hot streak that they started last year when the Rocket League and League of Legends teams each brought home their respective AIA championships. In only one year of existence, Brophy has managed to create and find success with teams in Overwatch, Rocket League, League of Legends, and now, Fortnite. They hope to find even more success this year and add to their total of two championships.
