After going back to a four and four season, the Broncos looked to make a statement against the Red Mountain Lions.
That is exactly what they did on both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball, coming away with a 48-39 victory Jan.14.
Chris Pierre ’11 scored 21 points for the Broncos and Sai Tummala ’11 brought in 11 points of his own, all from the first half.
Tummala also did his job of boxing out grabbing 10 rebounds to give him a double-double. The entire Red Mountain team had 11 rebounds.
In the first quarter, the Broncos got off to a 9-2 scoring run. However, the Lions started to hit more shots at the end of the period.
At the end of the first eight minutes, the Broncos led 12-8.
In the second the Brophy “D” held the Lions to seven points while the Broncos scored 10 from tough shots. At halftime, the score showed Brophy leading 22-15.
That lead would only grow more for Brophy as Pierre hit three more shots in the third to close out the quarter on a 12-10 run. Eight more minutes to go as the Broncos led 34-25.
In the fourth, the Lions came close to a deficit of four points, but Pierre knocked down two more free throws along with two hard blocks from Tummala to get the lead back to seven points.
After that and a few more free throws, the game sealed with a 48-39 victory over Red Mountain to get to a five and four record.
“We played hard and we finished strong,” Tummala said. “I thought we may have let them get back in it but we are a good team when it comes to winning and we beat a good team.”
Coach Mr. Tony Fuller had many other things to regard as well.
“It’s always nice to win more than lose a game like this,” he said. “A lot of teams do not win in Mesa such as our previous game.”
Mr. Fuller also lauded his point guard’s recent performance.
“I thought Ryan Milne ’10 played his best game out there without even scoring a single point. He coached the floor, got the ball to our shooters and directed everything on the court. As a point guard, our team needs him to do that and I know he will not let us down.”
Next up, the Broncos will travel to Hamilton to take on the Huskies Jan. 19.
