The chants of  “…3, 2, 1” and then the end of the game buzzer is what ended the Lacrosse teams 2022 season, except this time they weren’t on the losing side of the state championship game, like the 2021 season. The 4-part documentary series that the team created over the summer shows the whole season of what the lacrosse team had to go through to get to that moment.

“[It shows] a story at a chance of redemption,” said Head Coach Patrick Harbeson, “we knew we had a good team coming back and had a chance to make it back to the championship.”

Coach Harbeson added by saying, “We just wanted to film it all to remember it, whether we won or lost.”

Even though Brophy Lacrosse cruised to an undefeated state record, there were still a lot of ups and downs. “Our trip to Vegas was a big part of our season … lots of stuff happened that we weren’t planning on” a member of the team Drew Neff ’23 said, “The bus had a flat tire, we didn’t get to our hotel until 2 a.m. and that whole trip was a battle through and through.”

“The players understand that there is a standard at practice whether the camera’s there or not, you have to practice and play a certain way,” said Coach Harbeson.

Coach Herbeson and the players don’t play to get filmed by John Verhoestra, the lead videographer. “It’s almost more awkward if [Verhoestra] is not at practice,” said Coach Harbeson

Verhoestra played lacrosse growing up and brings a lot of positivity to the practices by being able to relate to the players while filming them.

Verhoestra’s main goal was to get footage to make clips and hype videos, said Neff. On whether they knew if they were going to create a documentary after the season ended, Neff said,“It really happened throughout the season.”

In respect to the Brophy community, Coach Harbeson thinks that this documentary will really legitimize their program and will show that, “anyone that wants to play lacrosse can come to Brophy … and hopefully visualize themselves in a player’s shoes someday.”

Even after losing a lot of key players from last year’s state championship run, Neff says that motivates him and the team to work hard and repeat as state champs this upcoming season.
