THE ROUNDUP
Were you born in-state or out of state?
Out of state. I was born in New York State.
Growing up what were your favorite classes and out of school hobbies?
I always loved English, so reading and writing.
I had this really cool class in sixth grade that was called Outdoor Education Team, where all of our major subjects were combined and mixed. So, if we were reading “Hatchet,” the book, we would go outside to the pond next to the school for science and math class to figure out if we had a spear and had to go fishing, what would the angle into the water need to be to hit a fish. It would combine. Whatever we were reading connected to science, connected to history, and so on.
Outside of school, I grew up doing gymnastics since I was three, and that took up most of my time. I also have three siblings and the neighborhood I grew up in had a lot of neighbors with kids our age, so we used to do a lot of neighborhood games, like jailbreak, hide-and-go-seek and spud. And then we had to go home by the time the streetlights came on, that was our curfew.
Where did you go to college and what was your main focus of study?
For undergrad, I went to Yale, and I was a theater studies major. And I did grad school twice. So, my first masters degree is a masters degree in educational theater from NYU Steinhardt. My second masters degree was an MFA, which stands for master of fine arts, and I did my MFA in acting at UCLA in Los Angeles.
What are all of your roles at Brophy?
I have two primary roles. I am English faculty, I teach English I and II. And then I am the theater program director.
And then I am a moderator for a couple of clubs, for Theater for Social Change and Brophy Student Theater.
How long have you been involved in theater as a whole?
I took a couple of theater classes in high school, as electives, but I didn’t audition for my first play until I was a freshman at Yale. That was the first time I actually did theater. And then I’ve had a whole life of it.
How did you hear about Brophy?
My partner Brandon is a Brophy alumni. He was class of ’04.
What has been your most enjoyable Brophy experience so far?
I’ve had a lot. I really loved experiencing the Diwali celebration, the Hindu celebration that a couple of the students led. I loved going to my first Brophy football game. It felt like Friday night lights, that was crazy. And then, working on “My Father Odysseus,” the play, in the fall. That was Brophy and Xavier communities and was a big highlight.
