Brophy announced that they would be offering classes online for the first time on Friday, March 13. This announcement was unprecedented, but after offering a year of classes online, Brophy has proven that this could be the new normal.
During these unprecedented times, Brophy has been forced to adapt to new normal and allow students to not only observe class from the safety of their home but even participate in the classroom discussions.
Since not all students can come in person to attend school, the hybrid solution is the way that Brophy has chosen to begin welcoming students back to campus.
Although these programs are offered and are a welcome solution, some would argue that they are far from perfect.
Whether it’s security issues or connection issues, there have been no shortage of problems that have been affecting students who are forced to attend school remotely. However, in spite of these issues, there have been many success stories.
Alec Von Borries ’23 has been attending class remotely for the entirety of the first semester and has described it as a “complete success.”
Von Borries credits a major part of this success to the systems that Brophy has in place. “The open line of communication that I have with my teachers is what has really allowed me to continue thriving,” Von Borries says.
Von Borries feels that the biggest challenge with online learning has been the distractions that are around him in his remote setting.
Leonard Romayor ’23 has also spent the first semester in distance learning. Romayor had a similar experience while learning from home, saying “At times I feel that it was much harder to focus. There are a lot of distractions at home and you really need to focus and lock-in.”
Seeing as most online learning occurs from home, distractions are the biggest challenge.
As Brophy approaches finals, they have opted to take all of their final exams to the online format.
Seeing as the number of COVID-19 cases are back on the rise, Brophy will continue offering remote courses throughout the second half of the school year.
