After Brophy recently considered renovating the newly acquired former Post Office building on 7th Street and Highland Avenue, administrators decided to leave the land to be used only as overflow parking.

The Post Office property will remain only as an auxiliary parking lot for the time being, having over 100 parking spaces available.

Brophy Vice President Ms. Adria Renke said a wrestling facility was on the table as a possible use for the space.

“There was a good potential (for a wrestling facility),” she said. “And then we started to look at the facility and we had to break it down … and we couldn’t make the numbers work. The remodel was going to be too expensive, unless we planned for it to be there for years and years.”

Though the decision means the wrestling program will not have a new practice location, Ms. Renke said the planned second gym will include a practice space for plans for wrestling.

“We are hoping to build the new gym in the next two to three years where wrestling will have a big home,” Ms. Renke said.

Wrestling head coach Mr. Jose Leyba ’94 said he is excited about the future space.

“In the future, when the new gym and wrestling facility is built, we would have all the space we need for all three levels to practice together, to practice separately … We could add climbing ropes and pull-up bars and our own showers … So we are excited in that aspect,” Mr. Leyba said.

Ms. Renke also explained that the Post Office could not become any sort of classroom or collection of classrooms due to the fact that there was the possibility of students rapidly and carelessly crossing 7th Street.

Ms. Renke said she hoped that the gym would be started in the next two to three years.

Father (Brophy President Fr. Eddie Reese S.J.) and I are chomping at the bit to build that gym,” she said, adding that $2-3 million would be sufficient to start work on the facility.
