Brophy suffers 2nd straight loss to Sunnyslope

Sunnyslope 48

By Jack Davis ’19

The Broncos struggled to score in a lopsided defeat Jan. 12 to the hands of the Sunnyslope Vikings.

The Broncos lost by a score of 48-33, making their record 5-6 and dropping their third straight game.

Sunnyslope’s Dane Maggi had a big game, draining three 3 pointers and scoring several other times.

At the end of the first quarter the Broncos trailed by one, 8-7.

Bo Brunkhorst ’16 sank a three pointer and scored again, keeping the Broncos in the game.

Brophy kept it close in the second, scoring 10 points to Sunnyslope’s 16.

Matt Kempton ’17 led the way with six points. Kempton finished with seven points in all. Sunnyslope took a 24-17 lead into halftime.

Brophy fell behind in the third quarter, the same thing that happened against Mountain View Jan. 8. The Vikings outscored the Broncos 10-6 and carried a 34-23 lead into the final quarter.

Brunkhorst said he thought team chemistry was the reason for the recent third quarter collapses.

“We can address (the scoring troubles) by working on our offense, getting our work together, being stronger, and have better team chemistry,” he said. “Tonight we didn’t have very good team chemistry, and that’s why our offense wasn’t flowing like the way it used to. Once our offense is flowing and we have team chemistry we’re a very effective team.”

Brunkhorst finished with 12 points in all.

Head coach Matt Hooten echoed the sentiment on team chemistry.

“We have times in the game where all five of us are on the same page and we are working together,” he said. “In those moments we tend to perform well. There are other times where we’re not as assured of what our teammates are doing and it becomes more of a struggle. Tonight we also struggled to rebound and get out in transition where sometimes we can get some easy buckets.”

The game opened up in the fourth quarter and Sunnyslope never looked back. They scored 14 points to Brophy’s 10. The Broncos attempted nine free throws in the fourth quarter alone and managed to convert on six of them.
