THE ROUNDUP
Brophy only allowed a combined 14 points in the second half, but the Broncos couldn’t execute on offense as they lost to Basha Jan. 5 at home.
“I thought we played a really great defensive game throughout,” said head coach Mr. Matt Hooten. “To hold them to 39 points in regulation, I think was a great effort by all of our guys.”
The first quarter was uneventful for the Broncos, as they managed nine points and held Basha to 15.
Brophy got their offense going in the second quarter. Jaxson Baker ’18 hit two three pointers before the end of the half and Carlos Saucedo ’17 had a buzzer-beating circus-shot layup.
The Broncos were knotted up with Basha at 25 after the first half.
Ian Burke ’18 was a source of offense for Brophy coming out of the locker room. He made two three pointers in the third quarter.
Burke contributed 12 points and Baker chipped in 10 on the night.
The game was tied up at 33 apiece heading into the final period.
Brophy surrendered some points to start the fourth quarter, but Burke knocked down two free throws to knot the game at 39.
Brophy went out of bounds on their final play, and Basha’s Terrell Brown missed a deep three pointer to end regulation. The game headed into overtime tied at 39.
Basha rattled off six consecutive points to take a 47-39 lead over Brophy halfway through the four minute period.
“Obviously, they got off to a little bit of a run at the beginning of overtime and we couldn’t quite catch up with them at that point,” Mr. Hooten said.
Matthew Kempton ’17 broke the scoring drought with a layup.
Saucedo hit a three pointer near the end of the period, but it was too late for Brophy.
Basha won 53-46 after overtime.
Terrell Brown came on in overtime for Basha, scoring eight of his 19 points in the four minute period alone. He hit a three pointer and converted an and-one.
“We’ve just got to make sure we play consistent for as long as the game lasts,” Mr. Hooten said. “If it’s 32 minutes, it’s 32 minutes. If it’s 36 minutes, we’ve got to play hard 36 minutes and make sure to move on to whatever the next play happens to be.”
Baker said the team is looking forward to playing Chandler in the coming days.
“We’re looking ahead to Chandler on Friday, hoping that we can get another win against them and keep going with our season,” he said. “We have to be able to win these games in the future.”
