Job board offers jobs, internships for students

The Brophy faculty and staff launched the school’s new job board on Oct. 18, 2018, allowing students to apply for jobs or internships in the Phoenix area.

Last spring, Mr. Bob Ryan had the idea of creating a resource for students who were looking to find work outside of school, and with the help of Mr. Steve Smith ’96 and others, created the Brophy job board.

The job board is a Google Doc that can be found on each students Canvas page.

It contains a list of all jobs and internships and has all the information about each one including the job title, days and times needed, location, and the link to apply.

“I just think that there’s great value in work and I think it’s a really healthy experience for kids to learn how to work and the responsibility involved there,” said Mr. Ryan.

Mr. Ryan mentioned that he often talks with kids at the beginning of the summer who are out looking for jobs and ask him if he has any ideas or jobs available at Brophy.

In the past, the Dad’s Club has tried to facilitate something similar to the job board or an internship program but it is never long lasting due to the amount of turnover in Dad’s Club leadership.

“I worked on it last summer a little bit and have just gotten it going recently,” Mr. Smith said.

The primary way of acquiring job positions to put on the job board has been through contacting alumni business owners.

Mrs. Kathy Mabry, director of communications, has been successful in contacting alumni through the alumni and community newsletters.

“One thing we could think about doing is putting it on our website,” Mrs. Mabry said.

Having the job board on the Brophy website might increase the number of individuals who learn about it, whether they are connected to Brophy or not.

Mr. Smith said that whether the business owners are Brophy alum or not, it would be good to have them post openings on the job board.

Currently, Mr. Smith is unaware of any students who have taken advantage of the job board and applied to any of the available jobs.

However, three or so students have emailed him asking about the jobs, but is unknown if any of those students have applied to one of the jobs.

From a survey of 140 students, 20% say that they would be interested in applying to a job on the job board.

The job board is still in its infancy and only consists of three jobs and one internship.

The creators hope to continue growing it and that students find it helpful in their quest for work.
