THE ROUNDUP
Junior running back Kevin Molloy ’11 led Brophy with three touchdowns and a two-point conversion as the Broncos made quick and easy work of Yuma Nov. 6.
Brophy put the Criminals away 49-12, finishing the regular season with an 8-2 record and in line to face Mountain Ridge in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 13.
Brophy was the first to receive the ball, and drove it down to Yuma’s 36 yard line. However, a turnover killed the drive when Chase Knox ’12 threw it to AJ Steimel ’10 and the football fell out for a fumble.
Yuma had a three play drive that ended with a 61-yard touchdown run, but missed the extra point attempt.
The Criminals were the first on the board with a 6-0 lead with 8:05 in the first quarter, but besides that score and another touchdown run in the third quarter, the rest of the night belonged to the Broncos.
It was no more fun and games as Brophy scored on the next drive from a Knox 12-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Graves ’11. Brophy got the lead back, now ahead 7-6 with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter.
The next set for the offense was just as productive and resulted in a Knox 10-yard touchdown pass to Scott Robson ’10, making it a 14-6 lead with 2:13 in the first quarter.
To start off the second quarter, Joe Maggi ’11 returned a punt to Yuma’s 26 yard line, and in a few plays, the Broncos scored once again with a Molloy four-yard touchdown run. The board showed a 21-6 lead with 10:26 left in the first half.
Molloy scored a two-yard touchdown run later along with a successful two-point conversion run to give Brophy a 29-6 lead with 6:10 in the second quarter.
With 2:40 left in the half Molloy took the ball in for the third time with a six-yard touchdown run and provided a 36-6 lead.
Right before the half concluded, the Bronco defense caused a fumble inside Yuma’s 10 yard line that was recovered by Andrew Lundahl ’10.
The second and third strings were sent in to play for the rest of the night. Back-up quarterback Garrett Wilson ’11 delivered the last TD pass of the night; this one for 11 yards to Robson.
The score at halftime was 42-6 Brophy; the most points scored in a half this year for the Broncos.
Only one more score would be added in the second half by the Broncos from a Wilson three-yard TD run. The board displayed Brophy leading 49-12 and that score stood for the rest of the game.
Although Max Leonesio ’10 had the night off, Molloy filled the senior’s shoes scoring three touchdowns and a two-point conversion on the ground along with 55 yards from 10 rushes.
Knox had a total of 162 passing yards and two touchdowns going 12 for 19. Knox only played for the first 22 minutes before being taken out for Wilson.
“This is exactly what we wanted,” Steimel said after the game. “We got motivated. We played everyone in this game and played everyone we needed to play in order to be ready. We know our coaches have prepared us and will keep on preparing us to win games, especially in the playoffs. This team will be ready to win and take it all this year.”
Coach Mr. Scooter Molander was also already looking ahead to the playoffs.
“Starting next week will be our third stage of the season and the most important part of our year,” he said. “We need to step it up and believe in ourselves. We must have the intensity to go out there every week and win. If we cannot do that, then we will not win. It is as simple as that.”
