Multiple politically oriented events have taken place over the course of the current Brophy semester, from bipartisan panels to an entire day dedicated to the election. After the election, however, students across Brophy have mixed reactions about the results.
With the definitive winner of the presidential election, many Broncos of all ages have varying opinions with the results. An example of this is T.C. Collum ‘26, a self-identified moderate and left-leaning democrat, said, “My heart aches for those who feel hurt, fearful, and disheartened by the election results”.
When asked to elaborate, he stated, “After a few days of mourning, I have taken to heart that the fight is not over”.
This sentiment was reflected in many other students’ opinions. When asked if he was satisfied with the results of the election, Cyrus Grover ‘27 also stated his frustration, saying, “I’m not, and I believe it’s a disgrace to America and that the people are going to be really ashamed of what’s going to come”
This discontent with the election results spans across a large portion of the Brophy student base. The mock election showed a majority of Brophy siding with President-Elect Trump.
As sides change, however, these opinions also change as well. An example of this is junior Matthew Polachek ‘26, leader of the Brophy Young Republicans club, stating that he was “satisfied with the overall election” after the results were released.
Polachek’s contentment with the results can almost speak for a large number of Brophy students who supported Trump over Harris up until election day. The Brophy Young Republicans club is supportive of republican values and opinions.
After the results of the election came out, a similarity also showed itself in the form of Brophy voting.
Donald Trump won the general presidential election, winning 312 electoral college votes compared to Democrat candidate Kamala Harris’s 226. Trump also won Brophy’s mock election, one that took place at the Day of Democracy.
The Day of Democracy was a one day, school-wide event focused solely on learning about issues, propositions and other information pertaining to the election and government as a whole. While Trump may have won the mock election held at the event, lowered voter turnout may limit its accuracy.
Of the 1,368 students at Brophy, only 856 registered to vote, and only 767 out of the 856 went out and voted according to the Director of Student Activities Mr. Pete Burr, who organized the mock election. This means that only 56% of Brophy students voted in the mock election.
Because only just over half of Brophy students voted, these results may not accurately represent student opinion. This is precisely why the voices of real students across Brophy need to be heard
