Some have said in recent years that the long standing rivalry between St. Mary’s and Brophy is dead.

But after a nail-biting 16-13 St. Mary’s victory over the Broncos Friday, Sept. 10, new life has been injected into the football feud between the Broncos and the Knights.

Trailing 16-7 with 3:18 left to play in the game, quarterback Tyler Bruggman ’13 hit Devon Allen ’13 for a 4-yard touchdown catch the cut the lead to 16-13 after a missed extra point.

Brophy’s defense forced a punt after three plays and the offense set up first down and 10 at the St. Mary’s 23-yard line for the final drive.

The Broncos drove to the 11 yard line then three consecutive incompletions put them at third down and 10 to go.

The Brophy field goal team ran out but after a St. Mary’s timeout, head coach Mr. Scooter Molander opted to send in the offensive unit and try for a game-winning touchdown.

Bruggman’s pass to senior wide receiver Jordan Graves ’11 was incomplete and the turnover on downs gave St. Mary’s the ball and the victory.

When asked about the decision to send out the offense on fourth down, Mr. Molander said, “we saw something we felt we could score a touchdown on … the throw came up short.”

Bruggman threw for 209 yards, two touchdowns and two  interceptions.

“(The) sophomore quarterback made a lot of big throws tonight, a lot of big throws,” Mr. Molander said.

Defensively, the Broncos kept pressure on the opposing quarterback as they have all season.

Charley Beck ’11 came away with two sacks and a blocked punt. He now has four sacks in three games.

Charley Beck is a hell of a football player; pound for pound one of the toughest kids in the state,” Mr. Molander said.

In addition to Beck’s pair of sacks, sophomore linebacker Robert Relf had one and one-half sacks.

Brophy fell behind early and trailed 10-0 at the start of the second quarter but cut it to 10-7 on a 20-yard touchdown reception by Josh Dennard ’11 with just under two minutes remaining in the first half.

Brophy got the ball back with 38 seconds left in the half and drove to the 25 yard line but a 37-yard field goal attempt by Zac Bryan ’12 was deflected and missed as time expired.

St. Mary’s scored again with 7:43 remaining in the game to extend their lead to 16-7.

Then Brophy drove from their own 31 yard line all the way to the end zone for the touchdown pass to Allen that cut the lead to 16-13.

“We came back every single time,” Mr. Molander said. “When it looked like that game was over we kept coming back. I think that shows the character of our team, I think it shows the character of our school.”
