THE ROUNDUP
Brophy traveled Friday, Sept. 23 to face the 3-2 North Canyon Rattlers, a Division I/Section III opponent, where the Bronco offense set the tone early en route to a 45-7 victory.
Devon Allen ’13 returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score and just minutes later Marche Dennard ’13 ran the ball for a 13-yard score, making the game 14-0.
At the end of the first quarter, Brophy was up 21-0 after Tyler Bruggman ’13 and Devon Allen ’13 connected for a 10-yard touchdown. In the following drive, Bruggman again hit Allen for a two yard touchdown just 42 seconds into the second quarter.
“I don’t really care about the statistics, as long as the team is winning games it doesn’t matter,” Allen said when asked about his three touchdown performance Friday. “If we (Bruggman and Fred Gammage ’13) keep working at it, we will have the best passing attack.”
Jake Faust ’12 intercepted a pass at Brophy’s own 40 yard line and the Broncos scored once again on a 13-yard rush by Matt Auran ’13 with 7:58 remaining in the half.
The Broncos added more points at the 1:33 mark when Zach Hudson ’12 tacked on a 42 yard field goal, extending the lead to 38-0 going into halftime.
Hudson converted all six point after attempts, along with this field goal.
Brophy scored their final points of the game with a 34 yard touchdown pass from Bruggman to Gammage.
The Rattlers finally got on the board later in the quarter with a 67-yard touchdown pass from Tre Grant to running back Kye Russell.
The Brophy defense gave up few big plays besides this long pass play and another 77 yard pass. For the most part, the defense stifled the Rattle offense by forcing five three and outs.
Defensive linemen Michael Mosharrafa ’12 and Dominic Riccitelli ’13 both had sacks. Both of them are also starters on the offensive line.
Bruggman finished the game at 10 for 15 passing for 157 yards and three touchdowns and was replaced by Greg Wirth ’13 after the Broncos first drive of the second half.
Bruggman tossed the ball to five different receivers including Gammage, who led the team with 90 yards off of three catches, and Allen, who finished with finished with a team leading four catches and three touchdowns.
D’Amani Grayer ’13 led the Bronco rushing attack with 44 yards while Dennard rushed for 28 yards off of just three carries. After just recently recovering from a left foot injury, Dennard went down with a leg injury with six minutes left in the first half.
“Our running backs were able to consistently gain yards,” said Alex Rosner ’13, starting center. “It really set up our pass game nicely.”
Andrew Simon ’12 came in at the start the second half and was able to eat up clock and yards. He rushed 14 times for a total of 38 yards.
Brophy advances to 5-0 on the season and next week will play another away game Sept. 3 at 2-3 Mountain Pointe.
