Homecoming week set to excite with ‘The Carnival’ theme

By Andrew J. Barnes ’12 and Tyler J. Scott ’12

Step right up, folks, and get ready for all the events this year’s homecoming week has to offer.

With its theme, “The Carnival,” the week’s activities are much related to its joyous premise.

“It is probably the weirdest homecoming week we’ll ever have with the St. Mary’s game, being off on Monday and having National Testing Day on Wednesday,” said Mr. Pete Burr ’07.

On Tuesday at lunch, a “Man vs. Food” style eating competition with Los Reyes de la Torta food will be held in the mall. A faculty member and one student from each class will go head-to-head in this competition.

Wednesday features nothing except the “Powder Puff” practice for those participating in it the following day.

There are many activities going on Thursday, including a dunk tank at lunch time featuring 10 teacher volunteers.

Also at lunch time there will be a DJ and possible performances from live bands.

At 6 p.m. that night, the “Powder Puff” game will take place at the Brophy Sports Campus featuring Xavier students in a flag football game.

Friday kicks off homecoming weekend with a rally after school with Xavier in the gym, which will feature “Weapons of Mass Percussion,” Brophy’s percussion ensemble.

That night, the rivalry game happens as Brophy takes on St. Mary’s at Phoenix College at 7 p.m.

The theme is simply to “Wear Red.”

Saturday night is the homecoming dance, which runs from 8-11:30 p.m.

There will be no shortage of festivities, which will feature three rides; one of them spins while you spin, which is “the most frequently vomited-on-ride the company had,” said Mr. Tony Oldani.

Along with the rides, there will also be a funhouse, somewhere between seven to nine carnival Midway games in the plaza, and several street performers will be present throughout the night, according to Mr. Oldani.

A DJ with a light show will be in the Great Hall, and Lifetouch will be taking photos as well, Mr. Burr said.

For food and beverage, there will be food vendors, cotton candy, kettle corn, a margarita machine, and possibly items from Dutch Bros.

Tickets are $10 presale and $15 at the door and can be purchased from Ms. Sandra Dennard in the SAC.

Guest passes are required for students outside of Brophy and Xavier and must be in by Friday, Oct. 14.

“It should be a pretty fantastic event,” Mr. Oldani said. “All the credit goes to the kids. They have been fantastic in organizing and planning this whole thing.”
