Three and Out: Top four storylines from Brophy vs. St. Mary’s

By Erik T. Masingill ’12

First Down: Broncos avenge 16-13 loss to St. Mary’s

Photo by Christian Schroeder '12 - D'Amani Grayer '13 celebates after a touchdown Oct. 14 against St. Mary's. Brophy defeated St. Mary's 63-0 during their Homecoming game.

Last year’s 16-13 loss to the Knights broke the streak of seven consecutive wins for the Broncos. However, St. Mary’s consecutive win streak ended at one after the Broncos’ 63-0 victory Oct. 14.

The 63-point victory is also the highest margin of win for the Broncos throughout every game in the rivalry.

The next highest margin of victory for Brophy is 37 points, which was two years ago when the Broncos defeated the Knights 44-7.

This victory is not only the highest margin of won for Brophy, but also the most points scored in a game against the Knights. The Broncos broke their record of 52 points scored in 2006 when Brophy won 52-21.

Second Down: Six different players score touchdowns

D’ Amani Grayer ’13, Devon Allen ’13, Fred Gammage ’12, Andrew Simon ’12, Andy Hale ’12 and Andrew Curtis ’13 all scored a touchdown in Brophy’s largest win of the season.

Half of those six scored twice in the game.

Grayer scored twice on a 39-yard touchdown run and an 11-yard touchdown reception. Allen caught a 27-yard touchdown pass and Gammage returned an interception for a 30-yard touchdown.

All of those scores occurred in the first quarter and combined for a 28-0 lead, which was already close to the offense’s average benchmark of 30 points per game.

In the second quarter, Curtis scored on a six-yard pass, Allen scored again on a 20-yard pass, Simon scored on a five-yard run and Hale scored on a three-yard run.

Brophy scored seven touchdowns in the first half, and Simon scored once more on a six-yard carry in the third quarter.

This win marked the season’s greatest number of Broncos who scored touchdowns.

Third Down: Defense obtains third shutout of the year

First, it was Mountain Ridge who was shutout by the Broncos 32-0 Aug 26. Second, it was Sandra Day O’ Connor 50-0 Sep. 16.

Now, the Broncos have three shutout victories with the latest addition of the St. Mary’s 63-0 win.

All three shutout wins have come in home games.

The Brophy defense is now ranked first in Division-I Section III with the fewest amount of allowed points in the season with 88. In second is Desert Vista with 104 total allowed points.

The shutout victory against the Knights marks five games against the two teams which have resulted in the same way.

The previous four shutout victories for Brophy came in 1963, 1964, 1996 and 2000.

Fourth Down: Regular season home games end

The Broncos played their last home game at Phoenix College for the year, at least for the rest of the regular season.

Brophy finished 5-0 at home with wins over Mountain Ridge, Boulder Creek, Sandra Day O’ Connor, Westview and now St. Mary’s.

In those games, the Broncos scored 214 total points while allowing just 54 points.

With a current 8-0 record, it appears likely the Broncos will receive a home playoff game. Until then, the Broncos will close out the season with two road games at Westwood Oct. 21 and at Pinnacle Oct. 28.
