THE ROUNDUP
Brophy’s cross country team finished its season with a run to a fourth place finish in 2011 the state meet.
This year was considered a rebuilding process since only three of the seven runners at state this year had been there before.
“All of the top varsity members were leaders during the season,” said coach Michael Keahon ’73. “The improvement by the team during the regular season was remarkable.”
Cross country is scored based on the top five runners, and this year the top five Brophy times were all within 35-40 seconds.
Jack Rubenzer ’13 led the team at the state scoring 19 points with a time of 16.40.05. Brock Ghelfi ’12 scored 26 points with a time of 16:49.44. Tanner Brown ’12 scored 34 points with a time of 16:59.74. Jack Welty ’12 scored 53 points with a time of 17:17.13 and Marco Ruiz ’13 rounded out the top five by scoring 57 points with a time of 17:19.58.
The team ended up scoring a total of 189 points to put them in fourth place only behind Mountain View who scored 143, Desert Vista who scored 123 and Highland who placed first with a score of 86.
“I now know what it truly means to be on a team with brothers, I will miss competing with the seniors who led us this year,” Ruiz said.
The team was more than pleased with a fourth place finish especially because of the loss of key players and the fact that the year was supposed to be a rebuilding process.
“In my 20 years of coaching cross country and track at Brophy, I would consider this team to be one of the best. I am looking forward to the track season!” Keahon said.
