THE ROUNDUP
As the sectional and state meets approach, the Brophy wrestling team is hard at work.
On Wednesday, Jan. 11 the Broncos fell to Horizon High School by four points with Horizon bringing up wrestlers from JV to secure the victory.
This past weekend Brophy went to the Flowing Wells Invitational in Tucson. The Broncos didn’t win the tournament as a team but they did have individual placers.
Chase Frank ’13 placed sixth at 220 pounds, Austin Schmidt ’12 placed fifth at 145 pounds and Marshall Varner ’13 placed third at 152 pounds.
This is considered to be one of the toughest tournaments in Arizona and returning state placers and champions didn’t even place.
“We didn’t wrestle as well as we could have and we are really stepping up our practices as the season comes to an end,” said Kiernan Bates ’12. “I’m not worried because we’re fixing the little things and will be ready to win when the state tournament rolls around; we have a lot of good kids.”
Head coach Mr. Brad Frank said he was proud of the team and they got big wins from Tanner Olhausen ’14, Sean Walborn ’12, Seth Hernandez ’13, Tarren Villaverde ’12, Varner and Frank, but could not pull off the victory against the third-ranked Huskies.
“It was probably the best meet we have wrestled as a team in the past two years,” Mr. Frank wrote in an email.
On Wednesday, Jan. 18 the Broncos beat North, South Mountain and Cesar Chavez. The win was Mr. Frank’s 200th dual meet victory.
The Broncos will travel to Mesa for the third annual Nate Johnson Memorial Red Mountain Tournament Friday Jan. 20 to Saturday Jan. 21.
