THE ROUNDUP
The Broncos defeated the Ironwood Bald Eagles 10-0 Tuesday, April 3 behind David Graybill’s ’12 two-hit, five inning shutout and a two homerun, four-RBI night by Chris Beall ’12.
Head baseball coach Mr. Tom Succow said the team played “pretty well despite getting home from Monday night’s victory at Yuma Kofa at 10:30 and most of the guys going to bed at 11:30.”
Beall led off the Broncos’ offensive night with a solo homerun in the bottom of the first to give Brophy an early 1-0 lead.
Graybill did not give up a single hit in the first two innings, striking out three in the process.
The Broncos struck again in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, followed by an Emilio Torrez ’12 solo homerun and another run scored on a sacrifice ground ball increasing Brophy’s lead to 4-0.
Beall hit his second homerun of the night, this time a three-run-homerun, in the bottom of the fifth inning increasing the lead to 7-0.
Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, after giving up seven runs, six hits and three walks on 70 pitches, Ironwood replaced starting pitcher Zack Werwinski with Kelby Holtorf.
Holtorf would only throw to five batters and he would not get an out, giving up three runs and five hits on only 13 pitches.
These last three runs would end the game with a mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth to give Brophy a 10-0 win advancing their record to 13-5 and 7-3 in official AIA power ranking games.
“Dave Graybill gave us a lot of energy on the mound and Chris Beall led us at the plate with Emilio Torrez and we got some hits at the end … we needed to take care of business and we did that tonight, winning a pretty clean game,” Mr. Succow said.
The Broncos won both games this week and have eight left in the season. Next week they will play Chandler Hamilton April 10 at home, and then Brophy’s longtime rival as the visitors April 12 at Phoenix St. Mary’s. The Broncos will face the Knights again at home April 13.
