A walk-off homerun by Chaparral’s Dylan Cozens gave the Firebirds the Arizona Division I title with a 5-3 win over Brophy May 15.
“We walked a couple in early and that ended up being the difference…I thought Dave Graybill ’12 did a great job coming back from that for us tonight,” said head coach Mr. Tom Succow of the game at Glendale’s Camelback Ranch stadium..
The Firebirds scored two runs in the first inning. Both Cozens and Michael Diamond were walked home after hitting singles.
The Broncos responded in the top of the second inning when Nick Jewitt ’12 hit a home run off the left-field foul pole to make it a 2-1 game.
In the next inning, Ryan Castellani ’14 tied the game at 2-2 with a solo-homerun of his own.
Chaparral retook the lead in the bottom half of the third inning when Diamond scored on a passed ball after reaching on a single and being bunted over to third.
In the fourth, Brophy tied the game again when Graybill hit an RBI single scoring Castellani who tripled earlier in the inning making the score 3-3.
In the fifth inning, Jake Steffens ’12 came into pitch for the Broncos and retired six batters in a row.
In the seventh, Chaparral won the state championship when Cozens hit a walk-off two-run-homerun on the first pitch he saw. Chaparral won the game 5-3.
“We called a pitch there and we just missed our spot,” Mr. Succow said.
Brophy finished with a record of 23-10.
