THE ROUNDUP
The Broncos scored 29 points in just more than 10 minutes in the third quarter to pull off a come from behind win Friday, Sept. 28 over undefeated Mountain Pointe at home.
After a slow start that resulted in being down 21-10 at halftime, Brophy improved in all phases of the game in the second half.
“We made some adjustments at halftime,” said head coach Mr. Scooter Molander. “We told our guys we need to take care of the things we can control.”
Running back Marche Dennard ’13 ran for 248 yards in the game and three touchdowns on the ground.
“He has just been lights out the last few weeks,” Mr. Molander said of Dennard’s performance.
In a highly touted game between two of the top five rated teams in the state, Mountain Pointe took an early lead in the first quarter going up 14-0.
Brophy responded with a touchdown of their own on a one-yard run by quarterback Tyler Bruggman ’13.
After another touchdown by Mountain Pointe, Brophy converted a 27-yard field goal with 3:02 left in the half.
Early in the third quarter linebackers Andrew Curtis ’13 and Robert Relf ’13 each came up with a interception, which were capped off by a pair of rushing touchdowns by Dennard.
The Broncos did not look back after that, recovering a fumble on the next kickoff and turning it into a seven-yard touchdown run by Devon Allen ’13.
Allen had a pair of rushing touchdowns and several catches on third down conversions.
Dennard had seven runs of 15 or more yards, including a 57-yarder for a touchdown late in the third quarter.
“Marche is trusting his offensive line” Mr. Molander said.
Bruggman threw a pass to Clarence Clark ’13 early in the fourth quarter who dodged tacklers and ran it in for a 64-yard touchdown to make the score 47-28.
A four-yard run by Allen for a touchdown with about four minutes left in the game sealed the final score at 54-28.
Bruggman finished with 122 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, which came on Brophy’s first drive of the game.
“The offensive line and Marche took a lot of pressure off of everyone,” Bruggman said.
Mr. Molander said he was proud of his team.
“We never stopped believing,” he said.
