THE ROUNDUP
Despite a third quarter rally and being outscored 34 to 28 in the second half, the Brophy Broncos defeated the Saint Mary’s Knights 60-49 Jan. 8 at home.
Brophy never let St. Mary’s lead at any point in the game on their way to an 11-point victory.
Tim Kempton ’13 led the Broncos in scoring with 20 points, shooting nine of nine from the free throw line; he also grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked three shots.
“It was a team effort,” Kempton said. “St. Mary’s is undersized in the post and our team kept getting the ball inside, so that helped me.”
Other Broncos like Romano Bottini ’14 and Max Kufel ’15 helped lead the team too. Bottini scored 10 points, shooting two of two from three point range, and Kufel scored seven points, along with two steals and four assists.
The Broncos only had 11 turnovers in the game, they shot 85 percent from the free throw line, 45 percent from the field and 86 percent from three point range.
“We handled the ball pretty well,” said head basketball coach Mr. Tony Fuller. “We executed pretty well and we have to keep it going for next game.”
A win against St. Mary’s is always extra special for Brophy; however over the past few years the basketball rivalry has not been as intense as past years.
“As the years progress the St. Mary’s teams have just been declining,” Kempton said.
Mr. Fuller also said the rivalry is not as big as it used to be.
“The rivalry has gone down,” Mr. Fuller said. “They are not as powerful as they once were.”
The Broncos have little time to celebrate the rivalry win against St. Mary’s before they go back to work. The team will host Chaparral Thursday, Jan. 10 at home.
“This is a big week and now we have to get ready for Chaparral next,” Mr. Fuller said.
