THE ROUNDUP
Brophy defeated Tolleson in overtime Thursday, Feb. 7, advancing them to the state championship game.
There was no score through the first half, however Brophy had nine shots in the first half and four of them were on target.
“I thought we attacked well throughout the first half and controlled possession most of the time,” said forward Ryan Grotjohn ’13. “We felt confident heading into the second half.”
The Bronco defense, led by Clarence Clark ’13 and Colin Zaccagnio ’13, limited Tolleson to only three shots in the first half and none of them were on target.
Brophy was able to score first at the 53rd minute of the game. Clark set up a goal with a long pass that reached Grotjohn 30 yards away from the net.
Grotjohn was able to beat a defender, settle the ball and then slot it pass the goalie to make the score 1-0 for the Broncos.
“I just kicked the ball off a volley and it hit the back corner of the goal,” Grotjohn said.
Tolleson was able to respond late in the 65th minute with a goal of its own. It came off a corner kick right to a Tolleson forward who was able to shoot the ball point blank at Brophy goalie Phil Mourikes ’14.
Mourikes was able to stop the shot and then blocked another; however, his second block left him on the ground and a Tolleson forward was able to drill the ball in to tie the game at one.
The game then ended with a score of 1-1 and would be decided in overtime.
“Tolleson has a tough defense but we knew if we kept pressuring their defense, they would give up one in OT,” said midfielder Oliver Shanks ’13.
Brophy took the lead five minutes into the overtime period on a goal from Riggs Lennon ’13. He received a pass from Colin Jackson ’13 and was able to get a one-on-one with the goalie and then drive it just over the goalie’s head to make it a 2-1 Brophy lead.
Lennon then scored again with six minutes left in overtime and made the final score 3-1 Brophy.
