THE ROUNDUP
Brophy scored 49 points in the first half and allowed just one score the entire game Thursday, Oct. 2 en route to a 55-7 victory over Corona Del Sol.
After starting the season 1-3, this marks the team’s third straight win, improving their record to 4-3.
“We knew that the tough schedule early on was going to pay off, and our guys really stayed the course,” said head coach Mr. Scooter Molander.
After a rough start to the game when the kickoff bounced off a Bronco player and into the hands of an Aztec, Brophy stopped Corona and never looked back.
They went on to score a season-high eight touchdowns in the form of three passing, four running and a defensive pick six.
Quarterback Cade Knox ’16, who won the Arizona Cardinals High School Player of the Week award last week, followed up with another big game passing for 223 yards and totaling four touchdowns (three passing and one rushing).
Two-way player Isaiah Oliver ’15 had three catches for 101 yards, including a 65-yard score. On defense he had two interceptions and returned one for his second touchdown.
The run game accounted for most of the offense’s production as running back Ryan Velez ’16 led the way with 95 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Fellow back Noah Pittenger ’17 scored a rushing and receiving touchdown while finishing with 130 total yards.
The defense also played great, according to Mr. Molander, as they allowed a season-low seven points and forced six turnovers.
The head coach said while the win is nice there are still things they need to work on.
“We had too many stupid penalties early on,” he said. “You can’t do that in really big games… There’s always aspects we need to improve on. We’ll watch the film and go from there.”
The Broncos will look to do just that with powerhouse Mountain Pointe next up on the schedule.
Notes:
- After going into the second half with a 49-point lead, Brophy subbed out starters on both sides of the ball in favor of second stringers. This created opportunities for younger players such as Josiah Minnifield ’16, who scored his first career touchdown.
- Robert Brooks ’17 also had a 49-yard touchdown reception.
- Brophy’s next game is Oct. 10 against Mountain Pointe, who is the third best team in Arizona, according to Maxpreps.com.
