THE ROUNDUP
Brophy’s Matthew Kempton ’17 tied for the team lead in scoring with Sean Dunn ’17 with 15 points Jan. 22 to help top Liberty 71-46.
The win gave Brophy a .500 record at 7-7.
Kempton chalked his performance and the victory up to controlling the pace.
“I think we really controlled the tempo throughout the game,” he said. “Liberty was confident, they wanted to push the tempo, but we did a good job of playing our game and getting really good shots and not forcing anything throughout the entire game. Defensively, we held them to a very good amount of points.”
Brophy scored 23 points early, seven of which were Dunn’s. The Broncos played stifling defense, only allowing Liberty four points.
Head coach Matt Hooten said the efficient offensive start was critical.
“We’ve talked a lot about trying to get out to a quick start and trying to get that silent night over quickly,” he said. “I thought the team came out with a tremendous amount of energy with 20 offensive rebounds tonight from different players so it was a team effort on the boards. We shared the ball, played really well, and fortunately built a big lead in the first half. We have to make sure we stay consistent with that in the second.”
The Broncos continued their offensive flow in the second quarter, scoring 17 and retaining their lead over Liberty going into the half.
After the break, Brophy started the quarter off with a one-and-one from Kempton. Kempton converted the free throw and finished the quarter with nine points.
Brophy had a quiet final quarter, scoring only 11 points, seven of which came off of free throws.
The Broncos look to win two in a row when they play Mountain Ridge Jan. 25.
