Matthew Kempton ’17 led Brophy in scoring with 25 points Feb. 18, but Brophy could not get a first round playoff win over 16 seed Mountain Pointe.
Mountain Pointe won by three points, 62-59. The Pride returned the favor after the Broncos beat them 65-62 in the regular season.
Brophy finished the 2015-16 season with a 13-14 record.
The Broncos kept it close in the first quarter, only trailing by one after Ian Burke ’18 hit a buzzer-beating three pointer.
Burke finished with 11 points, including three three pointers.
Mountain Pointe gained some separation against Brophy, outscoring them 13-9 in the second quarter. Kempton scored four points in the second quarter including a put-back and-one layup, but the Pride took a 22-17 lead into the half.
The Pride opened the third quarter going on a 6-0 run. Kempton recorded two consecutive and-ones, but the Pride’s scoring output was too much to overcome as they took a 12-point lead into the final quarter.
Brophy left it all on the court in the fourth quarter, scoring 28 points. Bo Brunkhorst ’16 contributed 13 points in his last quarter as a Bronco, including two three pointers.
Brunkhorst scored 15 points in all.
The Broncos were able to cut Mountain Pointe’s lead to one with six seconds left, but Brophy could not get a stop on the defensive end. The Broncos called a timeout with five seconds left and had possession of the ball, but Kempton was fouled.
Down three points with five seconds left, Kempton missed the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. The Broncos were unable to score off of the missed free throw tip, and Mountain Pointe won by three points, 62-59.
With the loss the Broncos were eliminated from the 2015-16 playoffs, ending their season.
