THE ROUNDUP
Over the summer and the beginning of this school year, Brophy upgraded the Robson.
Brophy began planning these improvements around December of 2017 because they felt as if the Robson wasn’t up-to-date with the rest of campus.
Mrs. Sherri Stephens, director of facilities and food service, was very involved with the upgrade process.
Mrs. Stephens said that the budget was $670,000 and a large portion of it was spent on air conditioning.
“The lobby had not had air conditioning and now it’s air-conditioned, which took two huge units which were a big budget item,” said Mrs. Stephens.
She said that not many people knew that the gym wasn’t air-conditioned but she thought it would be best for the students and staff to provide this luxury in our main sports facility.
Mrs. Stephens said, “The architectural work was all done pro bono by Joe Salvatore. He is withArchitekton. They are the people who have done the last few buildings so they did the Great Hall, the Dutch, the swimming pool, and the sports campus.”
Mrs. Stephens said that a few things that Brophy upgraded were not only the look of the lobby, but they enlarged the entrances, redid the restrooms and made room for all of the trophies since “Brophy has a lot of trophies.”
Brophy’s president Mrs. Adria Renke said that she doesn’t think that the lobby is completely finished, however.
“The coaches walked in and said ‘there is no logo anywhere’ and there isn’t. But there are walls, so we are going to tend to that,” said Mrs. Renke.
Mrs. Renke thinks that this gym lobby is more than just an entrance to a basketball court. She believes that this can be a new meeting space.
“We had the guys who signed athletically in there and I think that this will be a new gathering space,” Mrs. Renke said.
JV basketball player Nicolas “Nick” Williams ’21 really likes the new space.
Williams said, “They definitely added newer almost everything and it looks way nicer than it did before.”
“[The renovation] showcases that you are in one of the best facilities that you can be in for high school basketball,” said Williams.
A few things that were added were a newer snack bar, a large trophy case for sports trophies and many flatscreen televisions to display videos or words.
The upgrades in the Robson Gymnasium gave a new look to the building. The gym wasn’t up-to-date with the rest of campus and, with the updates, Brophy now has a modernized place to showcase trophies and host events.
