The Brophy varsity baseball team has gotten off to a solid start this season, winning eight of their first 11 games. They have many returning players including eight seniors who are committed to play college baseball. Head Coach Mr. Josh Garcia ‘07 described last year’s team as young and inexperienced but said this year’s team has poise and maturity.
The team has already played some games this season and have a 12-3 record as of Mar. 26. Some of these games have not been very smooth due to some inconsistencies in pitching, offense and defense.
“We’ve been down in a couple of games early on and we’ve had to climb back,” Mr. Garcia said. The team has had one walk off win and one game against Mountain View that they were losing early but ended up run-ruling Mountain View in a win.
A state championship is a real possibility for this team. Coach Garcia said “Our last four to five teams, if things go our way in certain directions we have a chance to win the state championship and this year is no different.” Brophy’s team has the experience and skill to make a run for the championship this year.
Mr. Garcia mentioned Johnny Casale ‘24, Willie Cornejo-Farmer ‘24, Jack Meissner ‘24 and George Smith ‘24 as key players for this season. These four are part of the first half of the batting lineup which is made up of experienced seniors. This year’s seniors are very seasoned due to some ups and downs and injuries during the 2023 season. Along with the maturity of the seniors, this team also has youth because the whole second half of the batting lineup is made up of sophomores.
Brophy beat Valley Christian on Mar. 25 who is ranked No. 11 in the country. Jack Ohman ‘24 allowed zero runs through six innings while also throwing four strikeouts. Trey Markham ‘24 had the lone RBI in the 1-0 win for Brophy.
