Brophy College Preparatory and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School have developed approaches to artificial intelligence in education, with Brophy implementing a four-level system for Fall 2024 and Belen utilizing departmental committees for AI integration in classrooms.
Brophy’s policy introduces a four-level system, replacing their 2023/2024 requirement of teacher permission for AI use. Brophy seeks to integrate AI into educational practices rather than restricting it.
Level 0 prohibits AI during testing and in-class assignments. For other work, assistive AI is allowed by default, while generative AI requires teacher permission. The policy outlines three additional categories: basic research and brainstorming (Level 1), minor content revision with citations (Level 2) and content generation (Level 3).
For potential AI misuse, Brophy recommends a “Start a Conversation” approach, encouraging discussion about content creation rather than relying on detection tools.
At Belen Jesuit in Miami, faculty are developing a similar approach.
“We created an AI committee of different teachers from each of the departments to play around with ChatGPT as much as possible so that they could see what it was capable of,” said Dr. Matthew Jordan, Director of Faculty Development at Belen.
Dr. Jordan also said that “if we skirt using AI, then we’re capping you at the knees by saying that you’re not going to be prepared to use Gen AI when you go into the workforce.”
“Personally, every time I use AI, I use it to get me closer to an answer and not give me an answer,” said Brophy student Asher Golub ’27.
Golub suggests AI integration should vary by subject, with “more structured” approaches in core subjects.
Brophy’s guidelines connect to Jesuit principles, explaining that AI tools should free up resources for community engagement and advancing school values.
Dr. Jordan said “part of what Jesuit schools want to do is they want to prepare you for the future, we don’t want to completely stop people from using it but we just want to teach responsible use of it.”
