The Mass choir at Brophy is becoming exceedingly popular with students of all grades. Why is this? There are three choir classes you can take at Brophy: Freshman Choir, Concert Choir, and Honors Chorale. The Mass choir, on the other hand, is a club that anyone can join. So why is it so appealing to so many students?
The Mass Choir gives students who do not have space in their schedule for a choir class a chance to get involved with choir. Not only does it allow students to tap into their musical side, but it also allows them to be a part of the Mass in a way they would never be able to without it.
Mason Fees ’26, a singer in the Mass choir, shared his views on why the Mass choir is so appealing. “Everybody thinks singing is fun, but singing with your friends is even more fun.” Fees explained that when the Mass Choir was first introduced to him, there were not very many people in it. Once he joined and realized how rewarding it was to sing at Mass, he encouraged more people to join. “It probably took three or four Masses before the snowball started rolling.” His friends, seeing him singing, created a snowball effect at Brophy, motivating more and more people to take part in the joyous activity that is singing at Mass.
Talking to Ms. Teresa Murphy, the choir teacher, the reason why students join the Mass choir was obvious. “Honestly, some guys just really enjoy doing something more interesting during Mass and contributing to the Mass and not just sitting in the pews.” This seems to be a popular answer to why students are so interested in joining the choir. Ms. Murphy also talks about the appeal of the younger students being able to spend time with upperclassmen, especially well-known students like those on the football team. Murphy also reassures that the songs chosen for Mass are not too technically complicated and can be learned without being able to read music. You do not need to be an expert to join the Mass choir.
At the end of last year, there were only 37 members. Currently, there are 86 members. The effect the Mass choir has on people is very apparent. If you are interested in joining the Mass choir, speak to Ms. Murphy.
