There is a very small, little heard of, indie film making the rounds at select theaters called “Sinners” and I thought I should do my part in making sure that it got a little of the limelight. To stay as vague as people, the best way I can describe the film is as a mixture of some of the coolest people ever doing some of the coolest stuff ever to make one of the coolest movies ever.
Once in a while, there comes a film that comes out and it feels more like an experience than an actual feature film. “Sinners” is the next addition to this illustrious group of films, in my opinion. It sits in my mind alongside features like “Dune: Part 2”.
With that in mind, I implore you to seek this movie out in theaters because I expect the experience to be less enjoyable watching at home on a laptop or on TV. It was halfway through that I realized that I had been smiling for almost the entire duration of the film. It’s just oozing with so much personality, so much care and attention to detail in its filmmaking that I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement.
The point worthy of the highest praise, in my opinion, is the score and the soundtrack accompanying a lot of the scenes. Music is an integral part of the movie’s theming, and there is such a beautiful mix of all kinds of sounds as the movie progresses. Anytime a character sings, it’s presented in such an ethereal way that it feels like it puts me in a trance, as the scenes are delivered with so much flair and expertise that it almost requires a second viewing.
In total, “Sinners” is a physical reminder of why I love the movies. It is easily the best movie of the year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it still holds that title come December. Don’t look up any trailers, don’t read anything about this movie, and take the eight dollars that it would cost to go see “A Minecraft Movie” and go see “Sinners”.
