The Broncos only had five hits in Thursday night’s road game against St. Mary’s, but that was enough to score 14 runs in a win over their rival 14-2.
“St. Mary’s is 19-2 overall and 11-1 in the power point rankings … this was a good win over a quality team,” said head coach Mr. Tom Succow.
Brophy scored three runs in the first with help from David Graybill ’12, who hit a leadoff triple, and Nick Jewett `12, who hit a two-run homerun.
In the second inning, the Broncos added to their lead with three walks and two hit-by-pitches. Connor Messman `13 scored on an error and two others scored on walks making the score 6-0
In the third, the Broncos added another run to the lead making it 7-0 on an Emilio Torrez `12 RBI single.
St. Mary’s took out freshman pitcher Antonio Coronado at the start of the fourth inning after he gave up three hits, four walks, two hit-by-pitches and seven runs. He was replaced by Cole Glanzer.
Brophy failed to score in the fourth, but St. Mary’s picked up two runs on a single and a triple followed by sacrifice outs.
In the fifth inning, Brophy scored seven more runs, four of which scored on walks and another scored on a wild pitch. The other two runs scored on St. Mary’s errors. Brophy scored three more runs off walks in the fifth. St. Mary’s failed to score in the bottom of the inning leading to a 14-2 mercy-rule victory for the Broncos.
The win extended the Broncos’ win streak to four games and their overall record of 15-5 and a 9-3 record in the power rankings.
“We had a couple of timely hits with Dave (Graybill) giving us momentum with his leadoff triple and Jake Steffens `12 throwing a great game tonight,” Mr. Succow said.
Steffens gave up two runs and three hits in five innings. He was the only pitcher for the Broncos.
