THE ROUNDUP
Brophy basketball beat Westwood at home Dec. 4 putting up 56 points in the first three quarters leading to their 63-36 victory.
“This was a good team win, and we played good defense keeping them less than 40 points” said head coach Mr. Tony Fuller about the win.
Tim Kempton ’13 had 10 points and seven rebounds in the first quarter alone. He finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, enough for a double-double even though he played little of the second half.
This was key for the Broncos because after the first quarter they had a seven-point lead and scored 14 points.
Romano Botini ’14 scored 17 points off of the bench, which was more than any other Brophy player.
Freshman Bo Brunckhorst ‘16 shared time at the point guard position with Kevin Nabong ’13, and Brunckhorst finished the game with nine points, three assists and four steals.
At the half the Broncos had extended their lead to 35-12, outscoring Westwood 21-5 in the second quarter.
Brophy was able to rest starters like Kempton to save them late in the game.
“It is my hope that we can use this win to help propel us to the Chaparral game Friday night…it’s going to be a barn burner,” Mr. Fuller said. He also dubbed Chaparral as Brophy’s “new rival.”
However, some players said they still think the team can improve going into the game at the “Bird Cage” Friday.
“We need to get better with turning it over and not playing sloppy, because they (Chaparral) are a good team,” Botini said.
Brophy will take on the Firebirds (3-2) Friday, Dec. 7 at Chaparral.
