In 2012 data collected from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey found that the the average young American spends $173 per week on food, about $8.23 per meal).

This budget could threaten the sight of a student’s brown bag lunch or the wait in the line at the cafeteria.  

The variety of food offerings by food delivery apps such as Postmates, Grubhub and Ubereats give students the potential, if budgeted properly, to order a different cuisine delivered for lunch every day.

Will Georgeoff ’19 frequently takes advantage of the delivery service provided by Postmates.

“I order Postmates about twice a week,” he said. “The delivery fee may vary or waver based on total purchase.”

Georgeoff said he likes the convenience of ordering from the apps, whether he is busy studying or tied up at home.

Postmates and other delivery services save their customers time that they would otherwise spend driving to and from restaurants or cooking in the kitchen.

Senior Jaxson Baker ’18 employs the Ubereats app when he is in need of a snack.

“I rely on Ubereats when I am doing something at home that is a priority, but I still need to get some type of food,” Baker said.

Baker said that his food orders with a delivery fee are around 10 to 11 dollars depending on where he is ordering from.

While the number of delivery apps are increasing and offering many convenient food choices for consumers, there will not be food delivery on Brophy’s campus, according to Dean of Students Mr. Patrick Higgins.

Mr. Higgins said that the delivery services are currently restricted on campus due to safety reasons, and added that it is important students be men of integrity by keeping the Michael’s Catering contract intact.  

Baker acknowledged Michael’s value, but said that delivery services provide students with more options and convenience.

“Michaels is an amazing thing we as students get to have on campus, but I think the next best thing to make lunch a bit easier would be to have the availability of ordering food from the outside,” Baker said.
