It was a cold night on the ice, but the Brophy Broncos came out on fire against the Mountain Lions as they won their hockey game 19-1 Feb. 27.

The victory puts the Broncos’ win column to double digits.

Both teams played each other three previous times and the Broncos won each matchup (8-1, 6-1 and 15-1). With this win, Brophy swept the Mountain Lions 4-0 in the regular season.

In the first period with 12:47 left, Tanner Tuohy ’10 scored the first goal on an assist from James Moeller ’12 to give Brophy the quick lead.

A minute later, Shawn Ludgate ’11 shot the puck in the net for an unassisted goal to bring the score to 2-0.

With 9:43 left in the first, Ryan Henry ’12 had a short-handed goal for the Broncos with an assist from Michael Weinberger ’10 to make the score 3-0.

Jonathan Carkeek ’12, Alex Smith ’10 and Tuohy each connected for a goal before the end of the period to provide Brophy a 6-0 lead.

In the second period, the pucks continued to pass the Mountain Lion goalie as Brophy scored six more goals in the period for a 12-0 lead. In those 15 minutes Thomas Abrate ’10 had two goals, Weinberger had three goals and Bobby Barker ’10 had one.

The third period showed some fight left in the Mountain Lions as they scored their first goal of the night within the first eight seconds. However, Brophy skaters provided the rest of the scoring.

Before game’s end, Eddie Prchal ’11 made two goals, Ludgate had one more, Spencer Smith ’10 had two, Tuohy had another and Moeller had his first.

The Brophy team finished with 19 goals, 34 assists, but also had eight penalties which caused 16 penalty minutes in the box.

Brophy goalie Nicholas Olsen ’12 had 18 saves from 19 shots while the Mountain Lions’ goalie had 40 saves from 59 shots.

“We always come out in every game,” Weinberger, the team captain, said. “Mountain Ridge is not that great, but we have to be prepared for the playoffs.”

“We won because we made a bunch of power play goals from 59 shots. Our team got to work and avoided a sloppy win,” Weinberger added.

Coach Mr. Eric Murrietta concurred that this game was a way to get ready for the playoffs soon.

“Our objective tonight was to master a flow game by having the players move around through the blue lines on the rink,” Mr. Murrietta said.

“We have to carry our lessons into next week in a big game against a team like Desert Vista. Most importantly, instead of playing for a sloppy win, we worked for a finesse win,” he said.

At a 10-6-2 record, the Broncos’ next match is against the 12-6-1 Thunder March 6.
