Soccer, basketball celebrate break with tournament championships

While most students, teachers and administrator at Brophy were on their Christmas break, the soccer and basketball teams both managed to finish first place in their winter tournaments.

The soccer team participated in the Arizona Soccer Showcase at the Scottsdale Sports Complex Dec. 27-30.

The Broncos went 4-0-1 in the showcase to get into the championship round. They tied Catalina Foothills (1-1), then defeated Coronal del Sol (7-1), Northwest Christian (4-0) and Hamilton (2-1).

The Broncos then defeated Gilbert 4-2 Dec. 30 to take home the first-place trophy. As of Jan. 5, the Broncos’ overall record is 10-1-1.

The basketball team participated in the 2011 McClintock Holliday Shootout at McClintock High School Dec. 27-30.

The Broncos marched to the finals with wins over Campo Verde (64-23) and Casa Grande (82-76). Although Brophy lost to Alta, Utah (68-54), the Broncos still went to the championship game against Betty Fairfax.

The Broncos defeated Fairfax 72-65 Dec. 30 and took home the school’s second first-place trophy over the break. Basketball improved their overall record to 12-3.
