Nathan Bass ’27 Finds His Voice in Music and Writing
By: Justin Woo ’28, Staff Writer
Nathan Bass ’27 has made music his cause at Brophy, going from piano to cello to saxophone until he’s found his natural voice on the guitar. It’s not about going from instrument to instrument but about finding out what works best for him and how music makes him who he is.
What he prizes above all else is his own voice. “I picked the guitar because it accompanies my singing better,” he says. He participates in music long after the music class. Once a member of the Brophy band, Bass was recently part of a musician exchange program in which he and nine other students collaborated to select songs to be performed. One highlight came during a Christmas concert, at which they performed a metal version of the song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” “That was a favorite performance of mine and a really fun event to be a part of,” he says.
Besides music, another outlet for his creativity is in words, and he even engages in freelance work in this area for others. That he loves the arts, with music or words, is what has enabled him to create lasting bonds and extend his identification with the community of Brophy.
