THE ROUNDUP
Baseball: The baseball season was cancelled last year after the Varsity team defeated Desert Vista to give themselves a 4-4 record. Looking for vengeance, the Broncos bring 12 seniors into the 2020-21 season to try and make a run at the State Championship this spring after a year dealing with COVID protocols.
Football: The football season was able to take place during the peak of the COVID-19, and although the team dealt with injuries throughout the season, they were able to complete seven of their eight scheduled games and grow a ton moving toward next year under head coach Jason Jewell.
Soccer: The Broncos were led by a Charlie Cobb ’21 strike late in the second period and three Bryan Figueroa ’21 saves on penalty kicks to defeat San Luis in the state championship game. The Bronco soccer team has now won three 6A state championships in a row and look to continue their success moving forward.
Basketball: Mr. Hooten’s varsity squad finished the season with a 15-5 record including a 6-2 record against 6A Premiere opponents. They were able to advance to the semifinals in the State playoffs, but unfortunately fell just short to a strong Sunnyslope team. Their roster only contained three seniors, so they will have a lot of returning starters heading into next year with a State Championship in mind.
Tennis: The team is coached by Eric Chalmers, led by senior Sean O’Gara ’21 and looks to continue building on the success that they have been having of late. They have been competing in the spring after not having their full season last year and is looking to work toward winning a state championship.
Wrestling: The wrestling team was led by David Sweetman ’23 and Ty Trickle ’24. The two placed third and fourth in the state respectively proving that the future is bright for Mr. Wayne Catan’s team.
Golf: Led by Charlie Palmer ‘23, Noah Nuez ’21 and Cameron Kaiser ’21, the golf team took the lead into the night after the first day of the State Championships. They unfortunately fell just short to a strong Hamilton squad, but always competed and gave themselves a chance in every tournament they played in all season long.
esports: The esports team was able to compete in both the fall and the spring. In the fall, the team was able to defend their championship and win the AIA League of Legends and Rocket League tournament. In the spring, the team has been competing against other schools around the valley in Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, and League of Legends.
Lacrosse: The lacrosse season was cancelled last year during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic so the team comes back this season looking for revenge. The senior-heavy squad looks to compete for a Championship this year, as they continue their winning streak against in-state opponents after an overtime loss to the Woodlands from Texas.
Volleyball: After the volleyball season was taken away abruptly last year the group is looking to make a serious run for a state banner even with a younger roster. They have some serious talent and a great set of coaches led by Mr. Tony Oldani, Mr. John Burns and Mr. Andy Schmidbauer ‘88 and are sure to be exciting to watch this year.
Swim and Dive: The swim and dive team had won 32 straight state championships in a row heading into their 2020 season. They had gone undefeated during the regular season, but unfortunately, could not compete in the playoffs after a few positive COVID-19 tests. Although the streak may have ended, the team was able to bond with one another more than ever before and looks to “continue” their streak moving forward.
Cross Country: The cross country team won the State Championships under head coach Oscar Borboa ’05 for the first time since 2003. Not only did the team win the title, it was also led by a 5k time of 15:34 from Xander Black ’21, which placed him first in the state and won him the individual title.
Track and Field: The team has had a successful start to the season, winning their first three meets including some standout performances in high jump, long jump and the mile. The team is looking forward to racing at the Chandler Rotary Meet at the beginning of April and the Fr. Olivier Invitational toward the end of the month.
Archery: In the team’s second year on Brophy’s campus, they were already able to improve on their score in the State Championships as they defeated the reigning six-time champions winning the Bullseye, 3D and individual competitions. In addition to this, they are looking to compete at the national level and improve their scores this season as they continue branching out to more students in the Brophy community.
Mountain Biking: Coached by Cooper Davis ’10, the mountain biking team spent a lot of time practicing at Papago Park and the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. All of this hard work ended up leading up to a big race for the team in the Flagstaff where the team fared well.
