Brophy basketball lost to Chaparral at home Wednesday, Jan. 14th after falling behind early in the first quarter and failing to slow down Chaparral’s high-powered offense.

Chaparral led the entire game.

Chaparral jumped to a quick 10-2 lead over Brophy halfway through the first quarter, and eventually outscored Brophy 17-7 by the end of the quarter with the help of Kenzo Nudo’s 11 points.

“I think we might have been a little too amped up,” said head coach Mr. Tony Fuller. “We overshot the ball and rushed some things.”

Brophy’s Brock Brunkhorst ’16 gave his team a boost with seven of his 13 points coming in the second quarter, which kept the Broncos competing with the Firebirds despite going into the locker room at half time trailing 31-22.

Forward Colter Galante ’16 and guard Carter Beaulieu ’16 gave Brophy valuable minutes off the bench.

The third quarter was the Bronco’s worst when they scored just five points from three different players.

“We need to stay poised on offense, and we really weren’t hustling back on defense and they took advantage of it,” said forward Danny Rolander ’15.

With 4:06 left in the third quarter, Chaparral jumped to a 36-24 lead and finished the quarter winning by 14.

Brophy’s 65 percent free throw shooting was an issue for a team that seemed to be looking for an offensive spark to start a scoring run, which finally came in a 20-point fourth quarter.

Matt Stark ’15 and Brunkhorst each contributed six points in the final quarter to push Brophy within 10 points of Chaparral.

But their run was not enough as they lost to Chaparral with a final score of 59-47.

“I thought we hustled, played with good energy, competed well and I think these guys really tried their best,” Mr. Fuller said.
