THE ROUNDUP
Every student knows the feeling of being at a Brophy football game.
Everyone knows the rollercoaster cheer, the cries of anguish or joy during a big Friday night game.
But what about other sports? Specifically, Xavier sports?
Brophy sports are more widely attended than most other events at either Brophy or Xavier, with football earning most of the draw.
The Brophy swim team hasn’t lost a state title in just under three decades. Soccer is highly ranked and baseball produces excellent players each year. Yet these games have a fraction of fans as football.
Xavier has a highly ranked teams in volleyball, tennis and soccer.
Yet, we don’t attend any of those.
Crowds can really empower and energize the people playing. In theater, the audience electrifies the experience with the energy, and powers the show in many respects.
Now, picture this. Brophy and Xavier flooding a volleyball game court after the Gators win a game. Imagine the people in the stands, shouting and cheering for the Brophy or Xavier soccer team every home game.
Doesn’t that sound amazing?
Now, there would have to be a few things that would have to change. For starters, the daily announcements should include the Xavier sports as well as Brophy, especially if they are on weekends.
Brophy sports overall should be highlighted more by student government, which would get people to show up in droves.
Second, Brophy students should support Xavier by buying some of their shirts as well. At every Brophy game, Xavier students wear Red Army shirts. I’ve never seen a student wearing a Xavier shirt.
If we want to really make things equal at Brophy and Xavier, we should at least support Xavier sports like Xavier supports Brophy.
Brophy prides itself on supportsmanship. To show up to everything and clap, or cheer, or watch. However Brophy students should show up to more People should stand at every event, including the ones for Xavier sports.
